Booking your officiant right away is a must. Plan on looking for one as soon as possible. At least a year in advance. If you are using a pastor or priest, schedules seem to book up pretty fast. The person who marries the two of you will certainly set the mood for your ceremony. It is usually nice to use someone who knows you both really well. Weather you want a minister or priest or a judge, the person who marries you will need to be met with several times to plan the flow of the ceremony. Create a list of things you would like said, verses used and type of vows that you will say before meeting with them. Many pastors will also want you to do pre-marital counseling so they can ensure that you are covering everything that needs to be talked about before you get married. This is a wonderful idea also sets you up for success as a married couple. These sessions can be 4-6 times meeting and if you want to get a discount on your marriage license fees the time spent in counseling will need to add up to 12 hours. The fee for a marriage license in Minnesota is $115 or $40 with counseling.
